Slepian eigenvalues as tunnelling rates

نویسندگان

چکیده

We calculate the eigenvalues of an integral operator associated with Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (or Slepian functions) by interpreting them as tunnelling probabilities in analogous quantum problem. Doing so allows us to extend a well-known approximation due that it applies outside important transition region where these pass from being near unity zero. Study has traditionally been problems arising signal analysis and optics but have more recently found relevance quantifying channel strengths available Multiple-In Multiple-Out (MIMO) radio communication. The approach presented promises easier generalisation broader range geometries possible latter context.

Redundancy Rates of Slepian-Wolf Coding∗

The results of Shannon theory are asymptotic and do not reflect the finite codeword lengths used in practice. Recent progress in design of distributed source codes, along with the need for distributed compression in sensor networks, has made it crucial to understand how quickly distributed communication systems can approach their ultimate limits. Slepian and Wolf considered the distributed enco...

Optimal rates from eigenvalues

A financial portfolio typically pays dividend based on its value. We show that there is a unique portfolio that pays the maximum dividend rate while remaining solvent, under appropriate assumptions. We also give a characterization of both the portfolio and the optimal dividend rate. © 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A Matrix Element for Chaotic Tunnelling Rates and Scarring Intensities

It is shown that tunnelling splittings in ergodic double wells and resonant widths in ergodic metastable wells can be approximated as easily-calculated matrix elements involving the wavefunction in the neighbourhood of a certain real orbit. This orbit is a continuation of the complex orbit which crosses the barrier with minimum imaginary action. The matrix element is computed by integrating acr...

Superluminal tunnelling times as weak values

We consider the tunnelling particle as a preand post-selected system and prove that the tunnelling time is the expectation value of the position of a ‘clock’ degree of freedom weakly coupled to it. Such a value, called a ‘weak value’, typically falls outside the eigenvalue spectrum of the operator. The appearance of unusual weak values has been associated with a unique interference structure ca...

Numerical Simulation of Mechanized Tunnelling as Part of an Integrated Optimization Platform for Tunnelling Design

Mechanised tunnelling is characterised by a number of interacting components relevant for the excavation process (the soil including groundwater, the TBM, the linings, the support at the cutting face and the tail void) and by a staged process of excavation and lining erection. This imposes a considerable challenge for realistic modelling of the tunnelling process. The paper addresses recent adv...
